Mista Boo: Portrait of a Drag Witch

Dr. Isabel Machado

I will present a portrait of Mista Boo, the drag character embodied by
artist and brujo Alejandro Garza, in three acts (inspired by the faces of
the Neopagan triple goddess). Drawing on oral history interviews with the
performer, I examine the relationship between queerness, art, witchcraft,
and marginalization within LGBTQIA+ communities

Dr. Isabel Machado is Co-editor of the Journal of Festive Studies and
author of the forthcoming book Carnival in Alabama: Marked Bodies and
Invented Traditions in Mobile. She is currently interviewing performers
who defy gender normativity in different cities for the “Queens of the South” oral history project.
